Wedding Anniversary Milestones

Wedding Anniversaries are always a fun celebration, however finding the right gift can be confusing. Whether you’re buying for your partner, or you’re buying for a married couple you know, sometimes you need to check what anniversary you’re buying for. Below we’ve created three tables – one for the UK version of the Traditional Wedding List, one for the US version of the Traditional Wedding List, and one for the Modern Wedding list which overs both the UK and US.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there as to which wedding milestone is celebrated on which year, so we’ve included all three tables here so you can compare. Sometimes one website will show one milestone, and another will show something completely different. If you’re confused, keep reading after the tables…

Conflictions And Discrepancies

If you’re reading this, it’s probably due to the fact you’ve seen conflicting information as to which milestone relates to which anniversary. You may be thinking “Have I been looking into the US version by accident instead of the UK version?!” – Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

The truth is these lists evolve over time. The reason it can sometimes seem confusing is because some websites report the lists as they were when they were created, however over time they’ve naturally evolved into the lists we know today.

An example of this is the table you may have seen over on Wikipedia. You’ll see they’ve listed the 6th anniversary as Sugar for the UK and as Iron for the US. In actual fact, we adopted Iron a long time ago as our number 6 here in the UK but half of us still celebrate it as the Sugar anniversary.

Ultimately though, you may choose to follow whichever list you want. If you’re celebrating your own anniversary, a good idea is to check with your partner which anniversary they think it is, and that way you can be sure you’re celebrating the same one together.

Traditional Or Modern? What’s The Difference?

The Traditional (or classic) wedding anniversary list was the original list which can be traced back to around 1937. This is the list most people still follow to this day. The Modern List was created much later in the 2000’s, most likely by commercial companies to added a new spin and more century-relevant gift ideas to the old list, however it’s still not been widely adopted to this day.

If you’re in doubt, follow the classic traditional list.

Anniversary Ideas

We’ve put together a small list of ideas below for the 1st to the 10th wedding anniversary. If you need some more guidance, keep reading!

Year 1 - Paper Anniversary

Firstly, the 1st Wedding Anniversary is paper, and is a very special anniversary. It’s your first year together as a married couple, and one that should definitely be celebrated! As a result, you want something that will last, something that you can look back on and reminisce about. Ultimately that could be anything from a book, to love letters, or even a framed picture.

Here are some Paper Wedding Anniversary gift ideas to inspire you:

Year 2 - Cotton Anniversary

After that, your 2nd Wedding Anniversary is cotton, and this celebrates your two years of being married! Express your love with some cotton themed anniversary gifts for each other. You could either by something as a surprise, or you could plan what you’re both going to get. How about matching his and hers dressing gowns? Or rather, you could even get cotton bed sheets!

We’ve got a couple of bits here to give you some ideas:

Year 3 - Leather Anniversary

When it comes to leather goods, it’s important to note that it doesn’t HAVE to be real leather. Faux leather can be just as good in terms of quality while also appearing special and thoughtful. Especially if the person you’re buying for is against leather. Similarly, there are some lovely items out there for both men and women including passport holders, personalised wallets and even a nice leather notebook.

Check out some of our 3rd year anniversary gift ideas below:

Year 4 - Linen Anniversary

Now this is a simple, but very nice anniversary which includes gifting linen. You could go with a nice bedspread set, or it could be one really luxurious item like a high thread count duvet cover. It all really depends on your partner. Remember you have to consider colour as well, what will match your bedroom. Because this is something you want to use!

We thought we’d find some nice ideas to inspire your linen anniversary.

Year 5 - Wood Anniversary

If you’re about to celebrate your 5th Wedding Anniversary, you’ll know the feeling of looking back and seeing how quickly time flies! 5 years is a pretty significant milestone in your marriage. Before you know it, it’ll be your 10th! Can you imagine being married for 10 years? So you want to make sure that you commemorate your 5 years with something extra special, and something that lasts.

For example, here are a couple of 5 year wooden anniversary gifts below:

Year 6 - Iron Anniversary

As per the wedding anniversary table, the 6th Wedding Anniversary is Iron. So you may think that finding something iron related may be a bit tricky, and it certainly can be. But there’s no fun in it if there’s no challenge right? And it makes celebrating your 6th Wedding Anniversary all the more special!

For instance, why not check out these to give you some iron clad ideas:

Year 7 - Copper Anniversary

We’re certainly getting there aren’t we? If you’re on your 7th year copper anniversary, well done you! It must be so exciting, and there are only 3 more years to go before you hit the big 10! I think that’s such a lovely thought, and look at all the years you have to look back on together. Make sure that you’re prepared for this one with our some ideas below:

Year 8 - Bronze Anniversary

Ok, so we’re getting into the more difficult anniversary gifts now! Bronze signifies your 8 years of being married. 8 years is a long time, and you want to find something really special for this one. All anniversaries are special. And as time goes on and the longer you’re together, the more you want to remind your partner just how much you love them.

You don’t always need a material gift to remind them, it could be a simple gesture. But we have a couple of ideas just in case you do want to give them a solid gift!

Year 9 - Pottery Anniversary

You’ve got one more year to go until you hit your big 10 year wedding anniversary! Above all, let’s get you sorted for your 9th. The 9th Wedding Anniversary is pottery, so there’s a fair amount giftwise that you could get. Pottery can include a nice vase, a plant pot or even a nice set of mugs. However, you need to be aware of your partners taste in pottery items.  For instance, they may like a nice earthware mug, but wouldn’t like an earthware vase.  As a result, maybe just double check, just to be sure!

Here are some ideas of what you could get:

Year 10 - Tin Anniversary

Now for the big 10! How do you feel? I’m so excited to get to this point.  And the theme for this milestone: tin. As a joke I would really just love to hand my husband a tin of baked beans. But if your partner isn’t much of a joker, and you’re looking for wedding anniversary gifts that are a bit more serious to celebrate this momentous occasion, you’ll want something else.

For example, we have a few ideas listed below to help you out.
