We all know a gamer in our lives, whether it’s video games, board games or drinking games. Board games are usually a super fun gift to both give and receive because they appeal to such a wide demographic, odds are you know someone who loves them, and you may even be here buying for yourself! Here are our picks for the Top 15 Board Game Gifts

1
Sheriff Of Nottingham £27.99

This is a strategic bluffing game.  With that being said, if you don’t have a good poker face, then you’re going to be in trouble.  I would highly recommend watching the video below to see how the game-play works. This is what originally made me want to play this game!

Chameleon £25

This is also a bluffing game, hence the name chameleon, you have to blend in! 😀 At the beginning of a round, each player is given a card.  This card will tell them if they’re hunting the chameleon, or if they are the chameleon. You then roll the dice, and this shows you the coordinates for a specific topic on your “topic” board.

Each topic are things like fairy tales, tv shows, movies etc… The chameleon doesn’t have their own topic board, so they have to guess and blend in with everyone so they’re not caught out.  Each player then says a word relating to that topic. Then it’s time to hunt the chameleon. If the chameleon manages to remain undetected, they get points. Should they get caught, but then guess the topic correctly, they also get points.  And if the rest of the team guesses who the chameleon is correctly, then everyone else except the chameleon gets points.

Boss Monster £17.99

This is one of our downright favorites to play, shortly after Christmas was my Birthday and guess what I got? The expansion pack so we can enjoy even more of this game!  I absolutely love retro style games and these beautifully designed cards capture exactly that.

The gameplay itself is pretty basic, and mostly it’s down to the luck of the draw.  The aim is to create your own dungeon using “room cards” to ensure that you destroy any heros that enter!  There are a couple of different modes you can play in, but the main mode is that you have to collect as many hero cards as your opponent.  To date I’ve lost 16 times and my dearest loving husband has won about 20… Players beware, if you’re a sore loser (like me) this might test your patience…

Betrayal at House on the Hill£32.45

This is like no board game I’ve played before, although it has a very similar roleplay feel to Dungeons and Dragons.  The great thing about this game is that there’s no set board and it all comes down to the luck of the draw, you build the board as you play.  Each player has to pick a room card and can place it around the initial card in order to explore.  There’s a special symbol on each of the cards which will refer to what will happen, for example, if you come across a particular symbol, that might mean that the villain of the game appears… Spooky, no?

This is another game where you can either cooperate, or choose to sabotage your teammates.

You’re more likely to win if you cooperate though!  For a bit more of a look at what the game involves, please check out this video.

Zombicide £67.19

This game probably ranks 2nd in my favorite board games to play.  Rather than being every player for him/herself, it’s all about cooperation.  You have more chance of winning if you work together and so you don’t get this friction between teammates if you’re competing against each other, more a sense of comradery – great for team building.

My explanation of this game probably won’t do it justice, so again if you want to know a little more about this one without someone butchering how it works, check out this video.

Alchemists £29.50

This is another of those compete against your team mates kind of games. It’s certainly a game where you have to think, the first time I played I got almost everything wrong, because I’m not exactly the sharpest spoon in the shed… I eventually got it though which means so can you!

It’s a nifty little game where you have to prove as many theories to game points.  The one to have the most points by the end wins.  You can download a nifty little app on your phone, and you test “potions” using it to prove “theories”.  If you know someone strategically minded, this is a great game to play.

Ticket To Ride £30.18

This board game is nice and easy going, great for if you just want to have a relaxed evening without having to really think.  The board is a map of a region (you can get different versions like Europe or America etc…). You collect cards which tell you where your trains need to connect and each turn you place one train carriage down until you complete the route.

If another player needs to get to a similar destination then it’s possible for them to cut you off from your route, you don’t tell eachother where it is you need to get to, otherwise they can then purposefully sabotage you!

Catan £34.99

Did you know there’s a website dedicated to this game? Because I certainly didn’t.  You can find it here for a more in depth look at this if you haven’t already played!

From a glance Catan seems pretty low key.  Essentially you’re travellers who have arrived on an island, and the objective is to use your resources to create a settlement for your people and gain supremacy over your competitors.

Nyctophobia Board Game£35.99

Nyctophobia Board Game Graphic Image Credit: 365Games

So Nyctophobia is a fear of the dark. Already this game sounds pretty creepy. From what I understand, this game relies on touch. Players of the game wear blackout glasses so they cannot actually see the board, therefore they rely on feeling their way around the board.  It’s an interesting premise and unusual game-play which is sure to make for an interesting game night!

Articulate £14.99

This is another one you guys might have already played, there’s a version for kids, as well as an expansion pack for adults if you know anyone who’s overplayed this and might already have the upper hand!

It’s a description game, where you’re given a series of cards, and you and your partner have to work together by describing what’s on the card and your partner guessing what that is, and the catch is that you only have 30 seconds to get through as many cards as possible to win.

This is definitely a competitive one, and maybe not one to play when you’re drinking, because who knows, you could just end up sitting there giggling because you know a word but can’t get it out… (I totally did NOT do this at a party once…)

Exit £13

So if you know someone who loves their Escape Room experiences, then they’ll like this game. It’s essentially Escape Room but for your own home! And the best part is there’s quite a few different Exit games, each a different scenario.  This particular one is based in a cabin in the woods.

If you know someone who likes problem solving and puzzles, this is one of the best board game gifts for them.

Pandemic Board Game£28.99

Now this game sounds pretty intense.  This is a co-operative game where you and your teammates have to work together to find cures to outbreaks and epidemics.  Whilst this game has been around for sometime, it has a lot of replayability as there’s plenty of expansion packs! 🙂

Mysterium £30.39

If you like games that require a process of elimination, then this makes for one of the best board game gifts.  It’s very similar to Cluedo except with a ghostly twist. It’s up to you and your teammates to help the ghost to find out who killed him 30 years ago. Do you think your loved ones will manage?

If you’re looking for co-operative board game gifts, then this is certainly one to try out. You and your friends must travel the world and solve mysteries, gather information all in an effort to protect the world from “The Ancient One”. There’s so many components to this game which means it has a lot of replayability 😀

Great Western Trail£40.34

I never thought I’d be into Westerns until I watched Westworld, although saying that I’m still not massively into westerns but still! This looks like a really intriguing game.  There’s a lot of components to it, and whilst it does seem quite daunting the premise seems quite simple.

At first glance, this seems a bit like the Alchemists board game, mixed with a bit of Ticket To Ride.  The idea being that you have to herd your best cattle from Texas to Kansas where off they go on their merry train!  In order to win the game, you must earn the most victory points!

Honourable Mentions

The following board game gifts didn't make it into our Top 15 picks, but we think they're still worth a mention...

Escape Room In A Box£29.99

Have any of you had the chance to do an escape room experience yet? We did our first one about 2 years ago, and it was great.  Now I’m not the brightest shovel in the drawer, but even I managed to have a lot of fun and work out some puzzles.

Now for those of you who haven’t heard of these, an escape room is a game.  It’s a game where you’re on a timer and you have to solve multiple puzzles to escape the room. Some places which offer escape room experiences are themed.  The first one we tried was a science type one. We’ve also tried a “curio” room which was full of all sorts of interesting things. Also, we did an “escape the butcher” room which was a horror experience.

If you know someone that’s into puzzles, or has already tried an escape room and loved it, then they’ll love this! It’s like an escape room, but a try it at home version.  Honestly, I think I’d end up breaking something, but hey ho!

Thanos Rising£40.49

Thanos Rising Graphic Image Credit: Amazon

Another fantastic looking game, I only came across this by accident.  As a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as the last Avengers movie, this looks epic. You literally re-enact the movie via this board game, and hopefully this time you’ll win. Go ahead and pick your favourite superhero to play as, and then choose your team to help you take him down.

This is a card and dice game, so it shouldn’t take too long to learn or get through a single playthrough.  But it would be a lot of fun to play this with friends for a board game night starter!

Scythe £51.95

This definitely seems like an interesting game.  From some of the reviews, it seems like it’s on the same wavelength as Catan.  So this seems like it would be ideal for someone who enjoys their strategy and resource management games. There’s also an expansion kit for down the line when you’re looking to upgrade which is a great sign.  It’s one of those games that likely needs a bit of practice before fully getting to grips with the mechanics of how it works.

But if you take the time to learn, it sounds like this would make a really great long term game to play over time.  You can view a Playthrough of the game here

Villainous £31.50

Now this is my kind of game, I love Disney villains! They should get more credit, I mean, if it wasn’t for them, there wouldn’t be a movie in the first place.  And they’re so underrated! As an adult I think I’m more like Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty than any other character in the Disney universe. With the exception of maybe Stitch… Anyway, this game was released this summer and already it’s got some great reviews.

Essentially it’s a game of strategy where you plot to overthrow the “heroes”. I think I could manage that, do you?  This is definitely one of my favourite board game gifts 😀
